The Rich Heritage of Pudelpointers

The Pudelpointer has a storied history dating back about 150 years. The breed originated in 1881 when German breeders crossed a German Pudel (quite different from today’s Poodle) and an English Pointer. Over the next year, about 85 Pointers were used along with a handful of Pudels to achieve the desired instincts and qualities. Pudelpointers made their way to the US in 1956 and have since been celebrated for their exceptional hunting skills.

Exceptional Traits of Pudelpointers

Pudelpointers are renowned bird dogs, famous for their great noses and remarkable endurance. Yet, their appeal extends beyond their hunting prowess. These dogs are known for their sweet personalities, loyalty, and strong family bonds. According to the AKC, Pudelpointers are “calm, self-controlled, versatile gun dogs with a distinct hunting instinct and lack game or gun shyness.” The AKC also praises them as “highly trainable.”
